A Guide: How To Not Let People Get You Out Of Character

Writer's picture: T. T.

Everyone has those moments where someone might say something that may or may not be intended to come off the way it does, but it‘s our choice to react, ignore, or move on.

Let me paint the picture for you. I am having a good morning with my lil boo at work. We’re on the same job today and it’s nice to spend some extra time with him and geting paid while doing it. Everything is fine until he mentions something that honestly didn’t need to be said. I didn’t say anything. I kept my cool and thought to myself a few questions that helped me make my decision on what was about to come out of my mouth next. And now I sit here writing this blog post 5 minutes after to share those questions I asked myself before I reacted.

Questions I asked myself:

1. What will happen after I say what I really want to say?

2. Is a reaction NECESSARY?

3. Did he mean it to come off that way or did I just turn something into nothing?

4. Will my reaction hurt him?

5. Is it worth starting an argument over?

6. Is it worth being mad at eachother for the little bit of time we do have together?

7. Is it better to just smile and move on?

8. Am I just being sensitive girl?

Now questions 2, 7, and 8 led me to the conclusion to just smile, laugh it off, and continue to have a good day. So the next time someone says something that may rub you the wrong way ask those questions to yourself and come up with a few of your own! Don’t ruin a good day and relationship that took someone 2 seconds to say and wasn’t really even that deep.
