DCF: Why Freshman Year is the Most Important

Writer's picture: T. T.

As we've all heard before, junior year is the hardest and once you've got to senior year, you're basically just taking your filler credits. I definitely agree that junior year is the hardest but, freshman year is the most important.

And here's a few reasons why:

  • Your GPA freshman year will be the most determining factor in your GPA through your 4 years of college. Starting off with a very high GPA will give you enough wiggle room if you happen to struggle with a certain class and still maintain a good GPA. However, if you start off with a low GPA it will take you soooooooo long to bring it back up and a lot of work. Slacking off will only cause you stress of trying to stay in school and off of academic probation, and that stress is not worth it. It will change you into a different person.

  • Reputation is a crazy thing in college. In high school, it mattered, but new things happened to people all the time, if something was going around about you, everyone would soon forget because something better or worse happened to the next person. College is not like that at all. If you get waisted drunk at a party freshman year and throw up in front of everyone, you will be known as the sloppy drunk freshman for a very long time. Now, I don't say this to scare you, but to remind you to always keep it tasteful and fun. Sloppiness is never a good luck.

  • Piggy backing off of reputation, making a name for yourself freshman year is also very important. You will meet people who you may or may not become close with through your college years, but they'll know you, and can vouch for you if anyone ever asks about you. They could say something like this even if you aren't close. "Oh yea I don't know her personally, but I heard she's been on it. She just got an internship at Essence and she's a Campus Correspondent for Her Campus this year. And she's so nice." Definetly, not trying to toot my own horn, but thats what you want people to be able say about you. Nice things. Accomplishments you've done. Honorary mentions.

Those are just a reasons why freshman year is the most important year. It will set you up for the rest of your college career.
